You need to make an appointment with an allergist who will then take a medical history and perform a series of skin tests and possibly some blood tests. You need to keep track of your symptoms and when they occur and also what you are exposed or what you ate prior to the symptoms. Find out if anyone else in your family has allergies and to what and what their symptoms are. Take this information with you to the allergist appointment, it will make diagnosing you easier and save you and the doc some time. In the meantime if you experience any difficulty breathing after eating something or being exposed to something, you need to get to the ER right away. Allergies are funny things, they don't always surface immediately, it usually takes more than one exposure to something before they rear their ugly heads. So people may get stung by a bee once or twice with no problem but the next time it almost kills them. The body has to be exposed to become sensitized to the offending substance, then the trouble starts. Go see the allergist ASAP! In the meantime you can also keep some Benadryl on hand as long as you have no allergy to it. It can cause drowsiness so be careful driving or working on machinery if you take it. It is a good basic antihistamine and can relieve symptoms of allergy. Take care and good luck!

The only way to find out what you are allergic to is to go to an Allergy Specialist. Before you go, you cannot take any antihistamine for a week. The Doctor will do a skin test of different allergens. This is not painful, but can get itchy. If you find out you are allergic to something, The doctor will advise you on what to do to avoid the problem. There are many options including avoidance, medication, and even shots that will help you build up an immunity to the allergen. In the meantime, good luck!

To find out if you have allerigies, you can have your doctor recommend an allergy specialist. You cannot take antihistamines for at least a week in order to make sure it is not preventing a reaction in the scratch test. The scratch test is a test performed where the doctor or nurse will rub a patch or your arm or back with alcohal to clean it mark it with a pen to indicate where each allergen will go and prick your skin on the marks with each allergen to introduce it to your body. It does not hurt but if you have an allergy it will probably itch. If you have a reaction (red and itchy skin) in a certain area the doctor will know what you are allergic to and can treat it properly. This is the most common way to find out although there are several more ways. Hope this helps! :)

You can go to your primary care physician and he can order a simple blood test which will give you an entire profile of all inhalent and environmental allergies as well as food allergies. It is very inexpensive compared to the skin prick testing the allergists do and much less invasive. The test is called Immunocap. It is covered by most insurances and has a sensitivity and specificity of 96-98% which equals that of the skin prick test. You do not have to go off of your antihistimines at the time your blood is drawn. Turn around time will be 2 days. Roughly 60% of pts. thinking they have allergies, really do not. Plus if you have asthma, the NIH recommends allergy testing because 60% of adult asthmatics have allergy triggers. Hope this helps

Usually you go to your MD,and have skin tests done using the most frequent allergens,to find out what your specific allergy may be.If you're having bad "allergic" reactions to something and don't know what it is,you need to see your Doctor soon to find out.Take care. SW RNP
