I am a volunteer firefighter in upstate New York. We are a small department with a small budget. We have been denied for nearly all grants applied for. What other routes could be taken to help my department get training, and equipment that we greatly need?

First let me say "You guys ROCK!!" The things New York went thru during 9/11. And the things you do every day, putting your lives on the line.

I live in a small community in Iowa. Our fire department uses fund raisers for raising cash. Fish frys, car washes, raffles, church offerings......that sort of thing. Living in a larger community I would think the possibilities would be endless. My favorite would be a nude fireman's calendar!!! HUBBA HUBBA!

I assume that you have applied for the FIREACT grants? It may be your narratives that are getting you denied. I live in FL. Our city has a population of 600. We have a VFD and have written 3 successful FIREACT grants, 4 forestry grants and several state grants. We attended a grant writing workshop years ago that improved our grant writing techniques. This may be what you need to do. Check with the DHS web site on when the next grant writing workshop is in your area and get to it. The techniques are worth the time and effort and just may land you a grant for 2007.

Fund raisers are great for build a fund over along period of time, say for a TIC, or the cost share of a new apparatus, but not so much for immediate needs.

Have you tried contacting the Association of Fire Fighters? Maybe also try getting a hold of some of the larger Fire Stations in a larger city and find out if they know of any other avenues you might be able to utilize. Good luck!
