Father K is clueless don't listen to him. He is right there are thousands of godheads. With independent characters. Different regions emphasize different deities:some do prefer Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahman. Actually, there is one Hindu God named Brahman. He is the same as the one in the trinity mentioned above, but in this form he is all. All the Godheads are just faces of him. So is everything else. God is within us, is us, is around us, is everything. Brahman in this sense is the universal conscience. That is the ultimate embodiement of God for hindus. Shiva is important, but again just a face of Brahman, and important in only some areas of India. Regionaly, different deities are preferred, but we all know they are all part of Brahman. This is how Hindus invented the concept of infinity. We envisioned it to be Brahman.

seeing other responses:Brahman (creator) Vishnu (preserver) and Shiva (destroyer, not a bad guy in western sense, destroyer as in paving way for new, like forest fires sometimes help forest). Generally, depending on your location, you will recognize these 3 but not as major. Goddesses ARE MAJOR! Bengal (region) worshipes Goddess Durga very seriously. It is our biggest holiday. According to myth, she saved all the Gods from a very serious demon who couldn't be killed by man or god. So goddess killed him.

Krishna is a reincarnation(avatar) of Vishnu, not Vishnu himself. He is still worshipped by many though, he was definitely a major character in Hinduism and he new he was Vishnu. Shiva also has many disciples. Ganesh, the elephant-headed God, is also important, but he holds many titles. One is remover of obstacles. There are others. Hinduism is pantheistic, pantheon of Gods representing one eternal being.

Some believe Shiva (the destoyer) is the supreme one, but some worship Vishnu(preserver), Brahman(creator), Ganesha (destroyer of obstacles) or Shakti (mother earth) above the others. There are also some who believe that Brahman, Shiva and Vishnu are part of a Trinity and are one. Like the Christian trinity. There are a lot of other God(esse)s too but these are the main ones.

Hinduism is not monotheistic, nor is it polytheistic. It's henotheistic, meaning that it believes in one Supreme being, and the subsequential Gods and Goddess are just manifestations -- or forms -- of the one God.

Regarding Shiva, that is one God of about three. Hindus typically worship one of two: Shiva or Vishnu (Krishna.) Just as there are derivations of Christianity -- Catholics, Protestants, Baptists, etc -- there are several types and different types of Hindu worship. Small villages tend to worship Goddesses and Gods of their specific villages (akin to the Ancient Greeks.)

If you want to know more, the sources I'll list are really helpful.

There are 33 million gods in Hinduism. But they don't worship all 33 million.

There is one universal manifestation of everything: Brahman.

There are three main gods, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.

There are hundreds...perhaps thousands of Hindu gods and demigods.

The three main gods are Brahma(n), the creator, Vishnu, the preserver, and S(h)iva, the destroyer.

...why do you ask "Christians" ? (they) had easily no longer something to do with Gods be conscious... The Scriptures have been written via the Prophets of the Hebrew international locations and a few Jews and Greeks of the 1st Century... God(YHVH) did no longer make "religions" in any respect ! Religions are the "spin of the concepts of mankind" in a silly attempt to attain as much as God. God is sensible sufficient to be attentive to that mankind ought to in no way attain as much as Him without His help... so... He made a "way" to attain Him with easily no faith(s) what-so-ever... (%. the "faith" of your decision...that's a failed course to God without His Divine help)... evaluate analyzing the e book of John from the hot testomony (no longer as a non secular textual content textile yet as a Divine instruction manual of the thank you to attain God..."the way") Even being an "A"theist, the analyzing won't harm you in any respect...this is going to easily teach you "the way" to attain God... this is going to nonetheless be your decision. (elect wisely). Pay particular interest to financial ruin 3 vs. sixteen & 17... financial ruin 14 vs. 6 & 7... and financial ruin 20 vs. 24 by using 31. (although this is all good)
