It really depends on you. If you have a strong programming background, you can get 90% of what you need to be functional in under a week 40 hours.

If you have never seen a programming language before, a good ball-park estimate to be really proficient and get all the ideas is a 3 credit hour class over a semester. That means Spend about 10 hours a week for about 12 weeks, or about 120 hours. A lot of that is understanding basic ideas of computing: loops, conditional statements, data types, functions, etc...

Its quite possible that one of those learn ___ in 24 hours books exists for matlab.

matlab is not that hard to learn. it just takes practice. Besides, you can always type help (what ever the function or topic). That was what i did to get through my first time with matlab. There area also a variety of books available. Just like any program, if you spend more time with it learning what it can do then the faster you will learn. But for a beginner, you'll find that matlab is fairly easy to use
