My Dad was one of the top marksmen in th USN during the 60s, which landed him a billet as a sniper in Nam. He never spoke much about the experience for many years, but more recently he will on occasion w some coaxing.

He had NO problem eliminating a Viet Cong officer w a head shot each & every opportunity he was presented w a clean shot. The gig required lieing in wait (in a tree usually) for 24,48, even 72 hours, but he & his spotter had a mission to fulfill to help save American lives. Not pulling the trigger was NEVER a consideration.

I am a sniper in the US ARMY. I served my last tour with the 101st in the Mahmouhdiyah/Yousifiyah (AKA Triangle of Death) - I personally only went on sniper missions when MI suggested a likely catch, IE. Recycled IED holes. When I went out, I was very much wanting to take the life of an individual who had killed soldiers from my unit. I felt extremely obligated to not fail. Because in doing so, I would be killing another soldier, so there is no question of whether or not a sniper will do it. Snipers go through a lot of try outs/screening before we even get into a sniper platoon, let alone go to sniper school.

The only thoughts are about wind speed and direction. Before you are even in that position you know what you have to do and how to do it. There is no elation involved except for the fact that you just put all your training into play and everything worked. As for feelings, better to get him before he gets you or one of your fellow Marines.
