I don't know when. But I believe gods and afterlife scenarios were created because man could not and still cannot explain "everything" - the reason or cause of the Universe, his being & the fact that he is but a blip in time in the cosmic scheme of things. Perhaps it is our purpose and destiny to become the gods we wish there to be.

"...those who believe in a personal God who cares about good and bad are hallucinating themselves beyond the shadow of a doubt..." Jack Kerouac from Desolation Angels

"To such men [artists & thinkers] the desperate and horrible thought has come that perhaps the whole of human life is but a bad joke, a violent and ill-fated abortion of the primal mother, a savage and dismal catastophe of nature. To them, too, however, the other thought has come that man is perhaps not merely a half-rational animal but a child of the gods and destined to immortality." Hermann Hesse from Steppenwolf.

"Death is an imposition on the human race, and no longer acceptable. Man has all but lost his ability to accommodate himself to personal extinction; he must now proceed to physically overcome it. In short, to kill death: to put an end to his own mortality as a certain consequence of being born." Alan Harrington from The Immortalist.

I think it came into being, as some maybe said, when people started to try to explain things and that would have followed the invention of communication (and a particular abstract type of communication, too - more than just "where's the food" and "let's mate").

Edit: and I do really mean the concept of god, not an actual god or gods.

It's difficult to think of someone as having no beginning, but that is part of the definition of who God is. God always was.
How can this be? God is infinite with no beginning and no end. This instills awe in some and complete disbelief in others. It's kind of comforting to know that there is something greater than the sum total of everything who is unconditional love.

I can't understand how God could have always existed—but that doesn't mean it isn't true! God is far greater than anything we see around us, and the Bible reminds us that He is "the high and lofty One ... who lives forever, whose name is holy" (Isaiah 57:15).

One reason we have difficulty understanding this is because even time itself was created by God. Before time began, God already existed! This is why the Bible calls Him "the Alpha and the Omega (which are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet), the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End" (Revelation 22:13). Part of God's greatness is that He is eternal. Unlike us, He had no beginning and He has no end.

The Bible, however, also tells us another great truth about God. It is this: Before time began, He was already preparing the way for our salvation. The Bible says, "This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time" (2 Timothy 1:9). And because Jesus Christ is fully divine, He too is eternal—and that's one reason why we can trust Him for our eternal salvation.

Most of all, never forget that one day over 2,000 years ago this eternal God came down to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. He did this to prove that He loves us and wants us to spend eternity with Him in heaven forever. Do you have this hope in your heart? You can, by giving your life to Jesus Christ today.

Frankly, God cannot be explained fully. As the Uncaused Cause of everything that can be caused to exist, we do have a factual account of God in the Bible. But much remains hidden from us. Nevertheless, there is enough evidence of God's eternal existence to make belief in Him rational and logical.

When God created the first man, that's the time when God came into being. Man felt and knew His exitence. God does exist before us for He is our Creator. But God came into being only when man was created. There is no question and no answer if there's no you and me. No one knows His existence if there's no you and me.

God was always their. He was in the beginning and in the end.He is everywhere at all time.He was in the garden when Adam and eve sinned and he will be at the end of the world as we know it. God is not restricted by time. It is hard for humans too grasp.
