The reason why I started doing Martial arts was because I was tired of being afraid. I couldn't sleep alone in the house because I was scared all the time. I would walk down the street at night, jumping at every sound. I just couldn't do it anymore. So it started as a self-defense situation, but it progressed into so much more. As my teacher says "it spoke to me". Now I do it for the confidence it brings me, the knowledge that not only can I take care of myself, but I can do something that not everyone can do. Every class is an accomplishment in dedication and persistance. I don't always get what my teacher is saying right away ( sometimes it takes a few shots to the head) but I'm still there and getting better every time. The sense of accomplishment is a great thing to me, and the confidence that accomplishment gives me travels over into my "real" life.

i hope to get a better understanding in many things. to keep in shape and be able to fight if i ever need to. I hope to learn respect for others, and become wiser than when i started. Martial arts cannot give you confidence, only you can create confidence in yourself, and martial arts helps some people do that.

I just re-started taking a Martial Art (Kempo) in october of last year. I hope to be able to lose some weight & be able to learn another martial art (especially 1 that has practical uses).

I would also like to increase both my stamina & endurance and overall become a little healthier through exercise.

It's martial arts. Of course you get confidence, cause you feel strong, and fit. You also get the fact that you can feel safe, and nobody can treat you poorly. Or you can feel that you can achieve anything since you achieved something as hard as that.

A life path in the martial arts must ultimately lead to one goal; to be an authentic person. The true path is one devoted to self development, internal growth, an ever-growing connection to the universe that surrounds us, and an understanding of peace, connectivity, and oneness that is waiting at the fingertips of us all.

'Nuff said. :-)

To me is a way of life. All the answers people gave here are part of my way of life. My ultimate goal is to be the perfect martial artist. I will never achieve this because nobody can be perfect. But that is the beuty of it, my road is endless, always something new to learn and master.

Well, being a short guy (not exactly small. 5'6", 154lbs, mostly muscle), self defense is my first goal. Big guys like to think they've got the best of a little guy. However, being a Christian, I pray that it will also mold my character. Integrity, respect, selflessness, to protect those who are weaker than myself, and to always be a gentleman.

Inner peace, mental balance, and the ability to simply walk away from a fight before it happens.
