My boyfriend and I have recently become engaged, and he gave me what I think is a really beautiful ring. I want to start wearing it right away, but I am not sure which finger it goes on. I said that it goes on the left hand, but my boyfriend said it goes on the right until we actually get married. I just want to find out which one it does go on.

Seriously? When a woman becomes engaged, she wears the ring on the ring finger (the one next to your pinkie finger) on the left hand. I have never heard anything about wearing an engagement ring on the right hand. The only kind of ring that I know of that you wear on your right hand would be a "Promise Ring" - whether that ring signifies that you are promised to be engaged to someone or if it signifies the popular "True Love Waits" (saving virginity for marriage) campaign.

You are completely right to wear your engagement ring on your left hand. For other engagement questions and etiquette, you should check out:http://weddings.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Wedding_Engagement_Etiquette.

Best of luck to you and I hope this information helps.

Traditionally it goes on the left hand ring finger. I think there are some cultures where the engagement ring is worn on the right hand, but here, assuming you are in the US, it goes on the same finger as your wedding ring will. On the day of your wedding you can move it to your right hand to make room for your wedding band. After that, the engagement ring usually goes above the wedding band - the wedding band is always worn closer to your heart.

My mother and I recently discussed this issue. She is from Brazil and there when you are engaged, you wear your engagement ring on the right hand, and when you get married, this switches and you should put an engagement ring on your left hand. I assume there are other countries who share this tradition. So, it is not make him immature or uneducated to say you should wear you engagement ring on your right hand. I had an argument with my mother that in American, the engagement ring is worn on the left hand. I suppose she did not notice that women had their engagement ring on their left hand. My advise to you and your fiance is to which ever tradition feels more close to you. Do as you wish. There is no correct of incorrect way.

traditionally its the same as the wedding rings (left hand ring finger). during the wedding the engagement ring is left off so the band can be placed by the groom. then the engagement ring would go on top of that. but these are times when tradition is an option. if you feel comfortable with it on another finger, do so.

Your engagement ring should go on your left ring finger ... once you are married, then your wedding band will go on first (same left ring finger) and the engagement ring will go on after it. The thought is that your wedding band should be the closest to your heart.

Left ring finger (next to your pinky). When you get married & have a wedding band, your wedding band goes first, then your engagment ring after that. THe wedding ring goes closer to your heart.

Left hand, next to pinky ,The reason for this is ,there is a vein ,straight up arm to the heart .that's why it was chosen.During actual wedding the engagement ring is left off, or you may wear it on right hand ,and then transfer it.Congratulations to you both .

If you don't know this, I wonder if you're old enough to get married. However, he may have been thinking of where to wear the engagement ring during the wedding ceremony. It is customer to wear your engagement ring on your right hand as you walk down the aisle, but move it over to the left after he's put the wedding ring on it.
