Meningitis Symptoms Infants and Children
A high-pitch whimpering,
moaning or crying.
Dislike of being handled.
Fretful arching back.
Neck retraction.
Refusing feeds or vomiting.


Stiff neck and headache (Remember with meningococcemia you do not always have a stiff neck) meningococcemia is when the bacteria enters the blood stream.

Blank, staring expression .
Difficult to wake up or very lethargic.
May have cold hands & feet.
Pale, blotchy skin color.
Unrelenting fever ( Fever that does not go away now matter what you do.)
Sensitivity to light
Cold feet or hands
Nausea or vomiting
Joint pain
A RED/PURPLE RASH bleeding under the skin. It can look like little red pin pricks, hickeys, or purplish bruises. Even check the bottom of the feet and arm pits.


Leg pain, cold hands and feet and abnormal skin color develop within 12 hours after infection - long before the more classic signs of the illness such as a rash, headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light and impaired consciousness.


If you think you or someone has the symptoms of meningitis, get to a hospital immediately! It can be life threatening, and can worsen very rapidly.
