Human beings are not masochists. Therefore, they must get something out of the bad behavior. Name any unhealthy habit...The person doing it gets something positive out of the behavior.

Smoking is no exception. There are very real psychological/emotional benefits to smoking. Just to name a few...The ability to...concentrate, stay alert, remember things, relax OR stay alert (depends on depth and frequency of inhaling), etc. Others use smoking to help them lose or keep off weight.

The bottom line is people are more focused on the immediate benefits of smoking versus the long-term health hazards.

Because they enjoy smoking and are willing to risk their health for something they enjoy. Anyhow, killing yourself through smoking is a distinct possibility but not a certainty.

However, I imagine many more people pay MacDonald's and other digusting companies lots of money, which is also paying money to kill yourself.

If you think of all the things that are part of your lifestyle which you know aren't healthy, but you do it anyway because you want to, it might help you understand smokers better. But as the tone of your question is pretty judgemental, so I imagine you might find empathy difficult...

How about if you started smoking in the 40's or 50's . It was a peer pressure thing and the Gov didn't say it was bad for you because of PAC money

as an ex-smoker, because you have to. the first few you ever smoke are the ones that nail you. then you cant stop unless you have a very strong will to stop. i knew it was time when i started wheezing at night. that was after 22 years as a smoker. even now, seven years later, there are times i still want one.

Nor to me...but then we have never had the habit to break, which I hear is a difficult one. It takes will power, support and cooperation from your friends and family and maybe some medication to do it....but it can be done!
