If your income is not from self-employment, the amount a dependent can make without having to file or pay tax is $5150 for 2006. Below that amount, you would not owe tax, but if you had anything withheld for federal income tax, file a return to get it refunded to you.

you can make MILLIONS and not be taxed if you know the system well enough. there are donations and loopholes for the rich, that is america's biggest flaw.
