I'm a student in college and am wondering whether or not I should pursue a career in pharmacy or become an electrical engineer..I like the money pharmacists make, but i don't want to have to work nights and weekends...i like the typical 9-5 jobs for electrical engineers..but wish there was a higher demand for electrical engineers...some info on either job would be helpful? what's it like being an electrical engineer? what's it like being a pharmacist?

well, my dad is an electrical engineer, and he makes over $70/hour. But, he has been working for like 20-30 years. Another thing is that right now he works at a nuclear power plant. He says that have plans to build a few more down in south eastern US, which will open up a lot of jobs. Electrical engineers are making like $55,000/year right off of collage. Right now he also gets Friday-Sunday off, but works 10 hours a day.

good luck

I am an elect"l. eng'r. by profession. Contrary to what you think EE's do not have the typical 9-5 jobs, especially when you are assigned in power or industrial plants. As you go higher in this profession you even have to be available 24-hour on call. The EE's you mean are those assigned in designs but even those people will have to be called any time of the day if they have to be consulted about their designs or projects especially in construction sites. Pharmacists who work on shifts I think are those in hospitals. Here in the Philippines licensed pharmacists can put up their own small pharmacy stores and hire people to run the store. In such a way a pharmacist has a better chance of owning his time (he can go to his store anytime he wants) than an electrical engineer. If I were you since you only want a profession just for the money why not become a pharmacist and once you have enough capital put up your own store. I have one important advise to you though. It is best to look for a job that not just pays well but also one that you later on will love.

there are as many pharmacists working 9 to 5 as electrical engineers. Why wait 20 years to make 50 an hour?Pharmacists do it straight out of school.....more on evenings and weekends. I love my weekdays off too!

But the single most important consideration is simply what you want to do. If EE is more interesting to you, then by all means you should do it.
