Because we are idiots. In 1966 the U.S. Congress decided that we were too stupid to be trusted with deciding on our own if we wanted to take advantage of the extra hours of daylight during the summer months or not. So they passed a law to force us to change our clocks every spring and fall.

I think I'll write letters to my represenatives and complain about it every time they make the change from Standard time.

To save energy...longer days mean more light....less people using electricity to light up their houses.

I believe it was back in world war 2, It helped with the Farmers to get more sun and more field work time.
