The fact is, you CAN transfer oral herpes to the genital area through oral sex. Herpes used to be thought of as type 1 in the mouth, and type 2 in the genital region. This was not accurate. Today 30% of all genital herpes cases are type 1, and in the college age range 60% are type 1.

Your girlfriend is right. Herpes is herpes, but unless she has actually been tested she does not know if she is already infected. It is VERY common, and just because she has not had an outbreak she cannot assume she is clear of the virus. If she does already have it, it will be very hard for her to develop it in another location (not impossible, but hard)

She should visit her doctor and get tested just to be sure. She should know not only for this relationship, but for any she may have in the future.

WEll cold sores are typically Herpes Simplex A and genital herpes are Herpes Simplex B. A is not as transferable as B to my knowledge. I have kissed my boyfriend a lot when I had a cold sore and he has never gotten them. WE have been together 5 years. Also I do not have B and have even talked to my doctor about it. (because I thought one might be the other) The two are different.

Cold sores and genital herpes are not even remotely the same thing. Just do some research on the two and give her the information you find.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

And she's right! If somebody has a cold sore, they should NOT be giving oral sex. You can pass the virus that way! And dude, it's WAY better to be safe than sorry here -- herpes is forever.

They Are the same.
Simplex One appears on the mouth whereas Simplex Two appears on the genitals. They can be passed from one place to the other - don't fool yourself.
