I'm baffled. My son is almost 16 and hasn't shown any interest in getting his driver's license. What's up with that?

I know a lot of kids like that. At first I though it was weird but it is more like it seems to be a pattern for this generation. They finally got it when they felt ready. So dont push him.

Don't rush him and don't worry ... his time will come. My own son didn't even ask about driver's education until last year. He has finally taken the classes, in car lessons and practised driving with my husband over the past year. He will be taking his road test at the end of this month. The kid is 21 and has always found taking public transportation got him to where he wanted to go and cheaply at that.

Now that he's gainfully employed he has decided it would be easier for him if he had a car. He's still not sure about buying a car since the insurance is still quite costly and perhaps driving our family car occasionally will do him just fine.

Don't hurry your boy ... I have a similar situation with my friend's daughter who is 23 years old. She's just now started talking about perhaps taking lessons! Times have changed and money is hard to come by for our kids~ Maybe it's much better that your 16 year old who may be mature in many respects .... isn't yet interested in driving ... there will be so much pressure from his friends once he's behind the wheel and at this point he's probably safer not driving until he truly has an interest and longing of his own to do so.

I wish you patience Dad .... :)

My friend didn't get his until he was about 20.. and he didn't even practice or anything up until that age, so he's a really bad driver and he hates to drive. You might want to try to encourage him to just get them and get it over with, because it's going to be harder the older he gets... let him know he doesn't have to drive if he doesn't want to, but it would be nice to have them now, just in case. If he's anything like my friend, it will take him a long time and he'll hate it. And where I'm from, everyone NEEDS their driving licenses.. it's very rural and it's impossible to walk anywhere, b/c everything is miles away, no public transportation, etc... it's really hard on him.

I waited a while before getting my learner's permit. Then I waited even longer before using it. After a while I decided that I was interested in using it and by the time I had finished the required time I was plenty ready for my license. I know plenty of other kids who were that way as well.

You might get an idea by thinking about his behavior riding his bike, skateboarding and stuff. Is he a speed seeking risk taker or is he quieter and more careful.

When I started learning to drive I drove about as fast as I could ride a bicycle , hahaha , because that seemed fast.

You could talk to him , explain to him under what rules he can use the family car or if you were gonna get another car for him .

He may be happy with what hes got now.

Yes, and I was baffled by it too (when I was a teenager I couldn’t wait to get my license). But, once his girlfriend’s Dad said he’d allow ‘car dates’ Son was wanting to go the next day to get his license. So basically he needed something that was ‘reason enough’ to motivate him to get the license.

My 18 y.o. still hasn't gotten his. He has gotten his permit and started driving at 17. But he wasn't that interested because the computer ruled his life. Now that he has gone on to college, it is much more appealing because he now has places to go, so he plans to get it this summer. Actually, I am glad that he will be driving at an older age, he wasn't ready at 16.

im 18 and i barely have any interest in driving either. nothing's wrong with me, i just dont have a car of my own, so i dont see the point in getting a license (i do have a permit though). i just walk everywhere. its healthier! you should be proud that your son isnt in a hurry. i've seen and heard of car crashes too many times for my sake, so maybe that's why

I don't have a son who doesn't want his licences but my older brother turned 16 and didn't get his licences untill about 3-4 months later. Idk y but he just did. He said he felt like there was no point because he had no were to go. I think part of the reason was b/c he was afarid.

This was true for my husband he was 21 when he got his for the first time. He knew he was to irresponsible and didn't want to get in trouble.
but you should probably talk to him and tell him that a dl is very important. Girls don't want to drive guys around. They don't want mom to tag along.
Also you cant always depend on everyone else to take you where you need to go.
A dl is very important for work also.`
