You know, the one he stared into to translate the majority of the Book of Mormon? What did he need Golden Plates and magic spectacles for if he wasn't even going to use them to produce the text?

Joseph Smith's own words about the gold plates and the Urim and Thummim or "magic spectacles" as you said:

"He (referring to the Angel Moroni) said there was a book deposited written upon gold plates, giving an account of the former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they sprang. He also said that the fullness of the everlasting gospel was contained in it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants. Also that there were two stones in silver bows, and these stones fastened to a breastplate constituted what is called the Urim and Thummim, deposited with the plates, and the possession and use of these stones was what constituted seers in ancient or former times, and that God had prepared them for the purpose of translating the book." (Times and Seasons, vol. 3, p. 753).

He did use the Urim and Thummin in the beginning but many scholars now theorize that it was too difficult to transport these around (being attached to a large breastplate) without attracting those mobs who were constantly on the lookout for him to steal the plates. He had a stone that was also used to look into and "see" things that were hidden, much like ancient seers did. The hat was just a hat, he used it to block out the light so that he could see clearly what was written in the stone.

Ivan gave a good explanation. God works in mysterious ways. I'm sure people would have thought it was wierd when Moses spoke to a burning bush or told people they just needed to look at his walking staff to be saved from poisenous serpents. Or, how about Christ telling someone to rub mud all over their eyes to see (and this wasn't even one of the wackier ones). Can you imagine when Mary told Joseph she saw an angel and the angel said she would give birth, and then she was pregnant? Wow. One could go on.

The hat had nothing to do with it, just the seer stones.

He didn't use magic spectacles...

He used his favourite scrying rock. The only reason a hat was involved was because he needed to look down at only the rock, so the hat provided his face a cushion and the darkness necessary for the scrying rock to do its magic.

He had a magic rock inside the magic hat, it was the rock that translated the Book of Mormon.

The hat is where they keep all the male bovine excrement they pass out... the guy who supposedly gave him the tablets took them back... he was a dead Indian... guess that makes him an Indian giver
