i wanted it to read "may the angles protect you"

The problem is that you used an online translator. They don't consider context, and so just translate a French word with the first English word they have in their database.
It DID translate 'may the angels protect you', but it translated 'may' as the noun (month of May) instead of the verb.
You were actually looking for 'que les anges vous protègent'.

May the angels protect you or be with you however i think it should be Mais les anges vous protegent my french is a bit rusty so if its wrong sorry

You ought to say "Que les anges vous protègent!"
