I have just gotten a female boxer puppy at 8 weeks and plan on getting a male as well. The male, is currently 6 weeks, and I am wondering if this is an ok time to take the puppy home. I would like for the female and male to grow together, so one does not feel dominant over the other one. I feel it would be an easier transition to make them both adjust to the new surroundings together.

I know that puppies should normally stay with their mom until 8 weeks, but I'm wondering how important that is. Would it be ok to bring the puppy home now?

Look I know your anxious but it is really important for the pup to stay with the mom until it's 8 weeks old. He needs to grow a bit more and put on some weight. and the mother dog teaches her pups so many things in this last 2 weeks with her.
Plus trying to train a 6 week old puppy is impossible because they are just not old enough.
The age difference between the 2 dogs is so little they will still grow up together and it will give you 2 more weeks to potty train the female.
Leave the pup where it is for now and go and get him when he's 8 weeks old.

Taking A Puppy At 6 Weeks

First of all staying another 2 weeks with the breeder would be best for the dog.

You have to be sure the puppy is totally weaned.

When I used to breed dogs at 6 weeks I would give them their shots, have them Vet checked and by 8 weeks they would really be ready to go.

If you must have the puppy this early, ask the breeders advice and make sure the pup is healthy and Vet Checked o by your Vet just in case something does happen.

I am a breeder of AKC standard poodles (show dogs), I would not allow a puppy of mine to leave before eight weeks (I usually wait until 10 wks min), because puppies need to learn skills from their dam and with their litter mates.

If I were a buyer, I would question ANY person who would sell a puppy before eight wks. Have they tested the sire and dam for genetic disorders, etc...? What are the health issues within their breeding stock's line?

Bottom line...the answer is NO!

The eight weeks is so important that it is illegal to sell puppies in Palm Beach COunty Fla if they are younger than 8 weeks. Puppies need shots and deworming at certain ages and they need the antibodies from mom's milk. 6 weeks is too young - you are asking for parvo or distemper - let that baby stay with mom. 2 weeks isn't enough time for the dogs to not get along. good luck -k-

8-12 weeks is the ideal age to get a puppy.

Younger than 8 weeks, and they will have social problems with other dogs (although you already have another dog, that should help) The older they get over 12 weeks, the more difficulty they have socializing with humans.

Also, it is important that one IS dominate! That is how dogs interact within their world and social structure. Observe them together and see who is dominate. Watch them eat, play, etc., and you will probably see who sets the tone, who takes the lead. Then reinforce that dominance with such subtle things as always giving the dominate dog their treat first. Failure to recognize and reinforce the social "pecking order" or pack heirarchy creates confusion for the dogs and causes them to fight more!

Dogs need a pack structure. It is important that they recognize you as alpha and that there is then an order between the two (or more) dogs.

Wait 2 more weeks . The mom's milk is very benificial to them . It helps them build up immunities which will help them fight off disease. Also, get all their shots and spay and neuter them. Even if you think it would be cute if they had pups,it is harmful for a pup so young to have puppies, which is what will happen if you don't get at least one of them fixed ! She not only could loose them , you could "loose" her as well. Wait the two weeks ,then take them to the vet.

it is best to wait until 8 wks when the puppy had all its puppy shots and worming done and is eatting good on its own---you dont want to take a pup to early--its really a shock to their system You can wait 2 more weeks and get a good healthy pup-ok? Jill R

They really do need that extra time with mom and their siblings to learn proper canine manners. Raising them together will not keep dominance issues from happening. There is always going to be a dominant dog and a subordinate dog. Generally you only really see ongoing issues when two dogs cannot agree on who is to be the alpha. However there are always exceptions. Obedience training will help by allowing them both to see you as their alpha. Subordinates do not fight in front of the alpha (except during breeding time when they sometimes get stupid). It's tabboo in the canine world.
