For your first trip with all the tourist things, live entertainment, beaches, several luaus, dancing etc, please go to Oahu. This is where Honolulu, Waikiki Beach, and Pearl Harbor are. Wonderful shopping, tourist attractions, surfers, beaches, and live entertainment - lots of it is free on the street in Waikiki or near the pool bars in the hotels. This sounds exactly like what you are looking for for your first time there. Later, you may consider seeing some of the other islands for that "laid-back-on-the-beach" experience. But, you can get that experience on Oahu as well during your first trip, by taking a car trip around the island. You can even go up to the north shore to see where the big waves come in during winter, and be back to your hotel in Waikiki by dinner time. Have lots of fun!

I love the islands and have been there six times. For your first visit, and from what you describe, I would recommend the island of Oahu. It has Waikiki Beach with all the entertainment, beaches, etc. Check out the Ala Moana Center--it is a huge mall--I always eat there at Patti's Chinese Kitchen--Yum.
For a second visit, consider the big island, Hawaii. It is (relatively) slower paced and less commercial, and has a variety of terrain, if you are the outdoor type. Out of the world's 13 climate zones, Hawaii has 11. To name a few things: Volcanoes National Park is pretty cool. There is a mountain (volcano) with snow and an observatory. Because it is a "newer" island, there are fewer sandy beaches, but they are there.
Have fun!

Hands down I liked Kauai the best. What I liked best was that the days you want to do nothing it was a lot more peaceful. However, on days when you feel active there is still a ton of awesome activities. ATV tour at Kipu Ranch was my fav.

They have the best Hawaiian Itineraries. That way you can see all of the Islands and decide for yourself. You will also be impressed with how low the prices are.
