Because if, for example, you had been stolen as a kid and raised in Bandar Abbas or New Delhi instead of a Christian place, do you really think you'd find Christianity? Or someone whose parents read the Koran being taken to live in Nebraska as a kid staying with Allah?

I say that people who have such strong religious conviction that everyone else is "misguided" or "wrong" are just emotionally unstable.

Personal tragedies in 2004 helped me realize that there are different interpretations of God/Allah/Buddah/etc. all over the world. No one is right. We kill even though all writings in most religion says not to.

This is my first time in this category. Your answers could change my life. Please help me decide.

I believe people are heavily influenced by the religion that surrounded them when they grew up, yes. Children's minds are very impressionable, and for good evolutionary reasons. Sadly, this means parents are also free to dump all kinds of sky fairy crap in their children's mind and little will be ever questioned.

Even at a later date some people who threw off their shackles may fall back when faced with a personal crisis.

Of course, the simple fact that location and time of birth has such a profound impact on which religion you are likely to follow sheds this whole 'absolute truth' thing of religion in a rather different light.

No, not really.

You see, religious conviction is passed down through parents. If a child's parents are religious, then they will most likely tell their child (at a very young age) that their religion is undoubtedly true. The child, being unable to question his/her parents (young children are taught to obey parents/adults, and they are also taught that adults are wise and should be listened to, for adults are supposed to be right about everything), will then latch onto the faith in question. As the child gets older, this faith will keep him/her from even entertaining the idea that his/her religion is wrong. When this child grows into an adult, he/she will have the same faith as his/her parents, and this faith will then be passed onto his/her own children. It's a rather simple cycle, really.

So, no. I don't think I'd be an atheist if I was raised by extremist Christians/Muslims/etc. Such parents would've blocked my capability to question the tenets of the belief system at a very early age, so I would've been unable to do the questioning that led me to become an atheist. But, because my parents are NOT very religious (they still are Christians, but it's not like I was sent to Church every Sunday or anything), I was able to think for myself and make my own decision involving religion.

I don’t think we are born to follow a certain religion I think most people are raised in a way to follow a religion and what is worse they are taught to never question it. Those who do are often looked down on. Those kind of beliefs are the most powerful and most dangerous ways of thinking because they will do anything to defend them. When someone thinks their way is the only true and right way it closes the door for any logical thoughts. Until people can open their minds to other ways of thinking and at least become tolerant then I don’t think you can truly appreciate and fully believe in something.
Like you said most religions say the same basic things so why all the hubbub. Do whats best for you. Not anyone else. They are your beliefs. Educate yourself and go with what feels right. and not because its the cool thing to do or because someone told you to believe a certain way.

Nope. Nobody's meant for a religion, but they're taught it by their parents or maybe other people. I was raised a Christian up to the age of twelve. I could have been raised somewhere else where there was less access to materials that would influence my religious decisions.. Or more. I could have never become an atheist if I was raised in an orphanage where I spent all my time unawarely training to become a minister.

At a certain age we will be given a choice whether want this religion or that religion. But if anyone choses Christianity, the person should know that being a Christian is not just being religious, it is not even religion . It is a living relationship with God himself.

Kind of, I think different religions are right for different people. What religion is right for you is based on your personality, so in that effect no you're not born to follow your religion it's based on your personality which forms over time. Does that make sense? May whatever diety you believe in bless you.

no, religion is one or a group of memes that pass from generation to generation by familial practice. Nothing more. And of course, once you leave the nest you're free to find any religion you want or happen upon. If you happen to be adopted from some other culture there's a good chance you'll happen upon the religion of that culture (that shouldn't come as a surprise).

Yes I do... but it took me 53yrs to get around to it...the conjectur you cite just is a waste of effort...God accepts all who come to Him in The Way He prescribes... you are fre to do whatever you like in this mortal world... the fact that I know you are mistaken dose not mean I can forbid you from wasteing your life and finding out, when it is too late, that God rejects those who reject Him and never get around to comeing to Him as He prescribes...I am of The True Christian Faith.. If you have questions concerning the basics of The Faith you may email me. One honest question receives one honest answer to the best of my ability...
