I apologize if this seems to include all pagans - but I wanted to spread as wide a net as possible to find out something.

In the woods behind my house, on the highest point of land in a field at the edge of the forest is a large circle made of rock - about 30 feet across.

In the center of the circle is a single large rock. All other stones have been removed from the circle.

The rocks in the circle are all one level high, except the rock at the north edge is two rocks high.

There are no signs of fire.

Any ideas what this is, and if a pagan site, which group it might belong to?

Thanks

Some more info. Thanks for all your answers so far.

In Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
the field itself is rock. The circle is relatively new - maybe 4-5 years old. (sorry , it's not an archeological site)

The only obvious reference point is North. The central stone is triangular while the other stones are random shaped.

And the stones are only about 12-14 inches high.

No apparent markings on anything or in the area. The circle itself is on bare rock.

Sounds Pagan. Perhaps Druid. What area of the world do you live in?

It sounds like an area for casting the sacred circle. The stone in the center is that altar. Did you find anything indicating the four corners of the earth?

Quite fascinating and something the archaeologists may be interested in. You might like to contact a local University and have them investigate. If they find something of interest, you may even gain some cash from allowing them to dig.

Edit: Hmm... I'm Canadian. That could be several things. One of them is a Native American worshipping site. The thing is that fire was a big part of things for them. It could also be a site for the old Asatru worshippers (Norse religion) from ancient times (they were here before Columbus and its believed they landed in Newfoundland). I'm not sure how big a part fire played in their rituals so it might apply.

Unfortunately, it could be many many different religions due to its location.

If its as new as you say, then its likely that some of the local Pagans have chosen the location for a ritual site. Probably Wiccan but its almost impossible to say without more details.

Could be alot of things. The area in which you live might lend some insight.

Is this a new circle, or something older? If it is new, it could be a group of Pagans use that place to celebrate.

How many stones are in the outer circle? Where are they placed relative to the center? Do they mark the seasons, directions .... that might help identify what they are for.

North is the starting point for most covens to call the elements to ritual. It could be a coincidence, but it's also a very good spot to have a ritual and do magick.

In my opinion it may be a Wiccan or Druid group.

Sorry, but since you haven't described any symbols found at the site, there isn't much to go on. It sounds like a site that just about any Pagan group might use as a sacred space.

It's hard to give you an answer based on the sketchy details here. How long have you lived there? In what part of the world is this located?
Does the area look like it's been disturbed recently?
How remote is this location?
This could've been used by any number of groups.
If you can give more detail, that would be helpful. Interesting find, btw.

particular, it meant something resembling a rustic-dweller. Then in Christian utilization it gradually took on the which potential of non-Christian. the persons mentioned as "Paganus" would have theory-approximately themselves as "pagani" regarding the place they lived (in the event that they lived in a pagus), yet they'd not have utilized the term to their non secular practices. The pre-restoration "neo" which potential new differentiates between the classic peoples mentioned as Pagans (or Paganus) and present day polytheists attempting to honor the classic deities of those peoples. whilst in the context of usual communique with persons who will possibly no longer have any linguistic pastimes or won't be familiar with the background of the Celts, that's simplier to apply the be conscious "pagan" to get my which potential in the time of. i attempt to apply whichever be conscious looks ultimate for the placement, besides the reality that i will admit that throughout lots of cases I do get lazy in my terminology. regrettably, there is no unique call for the indigeneous ideals and practices of the classic Celts. If the Celts might have had a be conscious for their faith, it would have probably been something resembling "residing" or "being" for the reason that faith wasn't separated from their way of existence.
