You don't have to use a heavy hand with punishment but you must be consistent with punishment. Start early because they will always know you are stronger. Always reward positive behavior, and punish bad behavior.

Books are full of the information your are seeking. Pick out 2 or 3 at a book store and sit down and thumb through a few. There will be one or two that has all the information you need now and for the future. One of the books should be a training book that will teach you how to teach your dog, not only thing he can do now and things to teach him in the future.

You must be kind but firm.

You'll find more information in a book than you will here. We are limited on space and there is so much you should know and we can't tell you everything & besides each trainer has their own way of doing things.

I myself prefer behavior modification instead of method training. I work with the individual and it's particular behavior.

You have a dog that has the potential of being aggressive. Here's the trick as I see it with pits (my brother has a blue nose). As a puppy, they will need a lot of exposure to other dogs and lots of other people. take your dog to obedience school. It's great to get them learning commands, but mostly important because they will be around tons of new dogs and people. Continue to take it to the park or other places as a puppy where dogs and people will be around. This will help your puppy get acclimated with other dogs and people and everything should work out fine.

Respect the breed !!, Please take your new pet to all of the obedience training you can get in and ALWAYS socialize it to all kinds of people, situations and sounds. Never ever let them think they are in charge and ALWAYS be a responsible dog owner.
