I am 20 years old and have a few mental issues going on. I was diagnosed when I was 14 with manic depression, which I beleive is now called bipolar disorder, but being stubborn like I am I refused to keep going after 3 visits. They tried to refer me to a phychotherapist but I never told my dad about the appt. Anyways, I have been trying to keep my stress and anger under control but a lot of times now it's hard. I am not abusive towards anyone, just get very mad easily. I have a 4 year old son and my husband has been overseas in the military for 2 years, so things are especially harder. I am just wondering what types of medicines there are that a doctor might put me on. I would think there are medicines to help people with stress, but am not sure what. As well for the easily-angered problem. I am not looking for a diagnoses of any problem I have, just some general info on what can be done for me when I do find the right doctor to see.

Just to make things clear, I am NOT looking for a diagnoses or trying to buy pills illegally. Just want to have an idea of what to expect for when I go.

I am a nurse practitioner so it would be inappropriate for me to suggest any medications for you to take to alleviate your mental health issues. However, there are so many new meds on the market right hnow and patients are finding relief with them. Consult a psychiatrist and get on track. You will be surprised how good you can feel when your serotonin in your brain is in balance.

Asking for help tells me how much you love your little boy and what a good mother you are...

You want what is best for him...you're willing to put aside your own resistance to treatment so that he will have a happier life...

Do you know what a wonderful gift that is to your son? It is priceless.

There are many effective medications available now that we didn't have even a few years ago.

Serotonin-re-uptake inhibitors such as Prozac are excellent anti-depressants which can be taken for decades with no ill effects.

Insist on something that's been around a long time (like Prozac..which is now available as a generic Rx....)

Don't mess with samples the drug rep dropped off at the doc's office--you don't need to do their drug-studies for them~!

Lithium is still a good choice for bi-polar disorder--and their are also newer drugs.
Generic Klonopin is an excellent anti-anxiety drug that stays in your system longer than Xanax.

I hope you'll make an appointment with a psychiatrist---NOT a psychologist---and simply tell him what you said here.

You deserve to be happy; you deserve to feel good about yourself...

Give that to yourself, and you are giving it to your son . . .

Also, call the social worker on the base & ask for a list of groups for moms & kids who's husbands/dad's are overseas....

You need friends who understand how hard this is for any woman.

I wish you peace & joy.

okay lets start by saying procrastinating goes along with it too..stubbornness yes..there are so many meds out there for bipolar its unbelievable..but be careful you don't want to go on any weight gainers! that will put you over the edge even more. There is a combination of meds they will put you on..a mood stabilizer and an antidepressant.. believe me don't get discouraged some meds the drs. have to play with and get the right one and the dose right. Don't drink or do any type of drugs while on them. I do know one thing don't go on depecote or lithium. They are zombie meds...they will have you walking around like you don't know anyone. I do know of one mood stabilizer TOPAMAX it works very well not a weight gainer and if you can get your ins. to pay for it its great...i know this because 4 ppl all females in my family are on it. they tried others but that seems to work.. But everyone is diff rent. With the meds also meditation and relaxation is very helpful. I hope you feel better for your sons sake the anger will go away if you treat this right.

Zyprexa, Risperdal, and Seroquel are the newest.

The biggest thing isn't the meds but staying on them. For some people with your disorder they refuse to stay on the meds.

Also understand that a lot of these meds take time to work. Some take over a month before you get the full benefits. So you got to stay on them because the "roller coaster" isn't up and down, it's like rolling over long hills and valleys.

Actually they have so many different drugs now, it is likely they will determine what you take based on your evaluation. They might put you on an old line of meds to see how you tolerate it and based on that move you to the newer ones that best fit.

There are lots of meds out there that can help you. I cannot recall the names right now. But there are many different meds for these conditions. I suggest you see a doctor. The main thing that I want to tell you is that you need to persevere, and to try different meds. Some things may not work for you while they do wonders for others. But if you move forward and try different meds, different dosages, etc, you stand an excellent chance of getting things under control. Good for you for working on this! Good luck.
All the best.

For your sake and the sake of your little boy, you need to see a psychiatrist who can properly diagnose you. Once the diagnosis is correct, your issues can be treated. It sounds like there may have been a mis-diagnosis in your past, so this is the most important part. If you just take med's, you may be taking the wrong ones for what you have. Med's are prescribed to correct a problem. For example, my son has ADHD. The med's he takes are to put back into his system the chemicals his brain does not make. The same may be true for you- that your body simply does not make the chemicals you need to control your emotions. This is nothing to be ashamed about. It is NOT your fault. You DO have control over your ability to see a qualified doctor and to TAKE the med's prescribed AS prescribed. As a mother, it is your duty to take care of yourself. Ask the doctor about whatever med's he/she prescribes- what to expect, what the side effects might be, if you should call him/her about side effects that are NOT on his/her list, and make a follow-up appointment to discuss how you feel on the med's after a couple of weeks. Congrat's for accepting your health issues & wanting to deal with them. You go, girl!

The side effects of medicines prescribed by Dr's are often worse than the condition causing everything from sleeplessness, over sleeping, rectal leakage to migraine. In would recommend you try a natural approach with a vitamin and mineral regimen you could see a Naturopath(http://www.naturopathic.org/) or try an over the counter product like Serenity(http://www.feelserenity.com/?b=5326&GCID=S15771x314). Good Luck

I could type about mental health for hours on end, because I'm just that crazy...joking. Instead I'll just suggest www.webmd.com
I'm not sure how vast the medication info or mental health info is on the website, but I refer to it all the time for everything else medical and whenever my sister or friends have an issue I always tell them to go their and check it out. But, everyone I talk to acts like they've never heard of webmd, so maybe it's not as commonly used as I think it is? Anyway, you can check it out for all questions medical.
