what causes it and how can you minimize it?

It is usually because you have an oily skin type. You should use a cleanser, toner and moituriser twice a day. Use an astringent toner as this will close the pores and use an oil free moisturiser so as not to add more oil to the skin.

use a face mask a couple of times a week - try a mud mask or a deep cleansing one and use an exfoliator to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin which will improve texture and tone of the skin.

Try to cut out any greasy foods and drink 2.5 litres of water per day

As a beauty therapist I see this alot, open pores are like cellulite they can be reduced but never gone(Jennifer Anniston has them so wheres our hope!) no really, you can minimise them drastically with good skin care, lots of water & cutting down on alcohol. You need to make sure your face is kept very clean and for 1 month use moisturisers with retinal or hydroxy acids. For 3 alternate days in the week use a home peeling kit if you cannot afford salon treatments, there are some very good ones on the market. Use carefully and make sure you use a SPF 15 moisturiser while treating skin. Do not use teenage skin products on your skin, they are very harsh even on teenage skin and strip the pores forcing your pores to over produce sebum which then blocks them. So be patient and give it time and it will get better.Good Luck!

Large pores are created in two ways and large pores are present anywhere like nose, face or facial skin. The first is through aggressive squeezing of blackheads and whiteheads, which stretches the pore. The second is heavy sebum production. When the sebaceous gland produces large volumes of sebum, the pore is forced to expand to release the oil and is therefore enlarged.

The best you can do is keep pores debris-free with thorough cleansing, exfoliation, masks and professional facials - all will help make pores appear slightly smaller.

Big pores can be caused by anything from scrubs to squeezing zits. Say you've got big pores. You might have blackheads--in which case, and this sounds really strange, you should squeeze until the yellow-tinged buildup comes out. This will reduce the pores, although you might get a bruised spot for about 3 days. If you don't have blackheads, get a microdermabrasion* kit--or get microdermabrasion from a dermatologist.

*Microdermabrasion is a practice that is widely popular nowadays in the U.S. It's when you slightly shave off the top of your pores so they get smaller. I know it sounds creepy, but it's helpful.

It's just your genes. If you find a good skin regime and stick to it you can have cell turn over and healthy skin shows the pores less.
If you find a good regime - (wash, toner, cream)
and do a weekly mask and exfoliant too your pores should subsize or you will have a healthy complexion.
