You start working on it soon as the puppy can walk, but the dog will not have full bladder control till some time between 3 to 4 months old. That means at that age they can realize they have to go and try to get your attention to get them out, they can not hold it very long though, if you don't notice for 4 or 5 minutes they may have an accident because they couldn't hold it any longer.

To reduce the need to let the dog out at night, pick up the water an hour before bed time.

Housetraining should start the minute you bring your puppy home. You'll find that the earlier you begin, the earlier you'll have results. Start by taking your puppy outside every few hours to a designated location. As your puppy gets older you'll be able to wait longer between "potty breaks" (my general gauge is 1 hour for every month of age)

You don't want to punish your puppy for accidents. If you catch him/her in the process just tell him/her NO and carry your puppy outside. If you don't catch your puppy actually in the act, then just clean up the mess and go on. You also want to confine the area your puppy has access to. I prefer kennel training, but the method is up to you.

Depending on the breed of your puppy, you'll start seeing results between the ages of 3 months and 1 year.

House training should start from the day you bring it home.

Start by taking it outside every hour, on the hour, and once or twice throughout the night. After the dog seems to understand it needs to potty outside, start every 2 hours. Do this for the first few months you have the dog. Eventually the dog should be able to alert you to it needing to go out.

But you should start trying to housebreak the day you bring puppy home!

If you have a litter of puppies, then start taking them outside as soon as they are old enough to walk. Its never to early to start teaching animals good habits.

Start early, but don't expect too much. Use positive reinforcement techniques only beginning at 8 wks. old. Lots of praise and reward...no spanking or rubbing noses in the mess. Scolding can work against you early on. A pup doesn't have a good memory until about 4 months old...so learing is accomplished by consistent repetition.

i bought a yorkie not to long ago and i began to train him right then,8weeks.
i used the kennel effect.
put the puppy in a kennel and when you take him out ,take him straight outside and let him use the bathroom.when u get thru playing with him put him back in the kennel or crate or even a fenced off room .first thing when u take him back out, start the same way again.lt worked for me. he is now going outside every time and runs the house lol

always start right away. Take the dog outside very often to hopefully catch them going to the bathroom. Use a lot of reinforcement when they use the potty outside, but expect accidents inside. When there is an accident inside, don't scold or punish the dog when they're very young. It can take some time to teach your dog where it is appropriate to use the bathroom, but the more time you put into it, the quicker the learning will go

As early as 7-8 weeks old. The sooner you start the easier it is. My female Boston Terrier was housetrained by 9 weeks old! I am now house training our new Boston, we got him at 10 weeks old and began housetraining immediately. He is now 12-13 weeks old and is almost housetrained (boys can be more difficult to housetrain than girls because of the "marking instinct").
