I would like to do something different with my hair, but it's red so I don't want to permanently change my color. I was thinking about maybe dying my bottom layers. If I use semipermanent dye, will my hair go back to my original color? Will it damage my hair, how long does it normally last, and what kind should I use? Can I still use a flat iron on the colored parts? Any tips on making it look the best I can? Please be specific!

semi-perminant shouldnt do your hair that much damage , but if you already have dye on your hair it could react and turn it green ( i had that problem) and you could even get perminant and if you wanted to get the perminant dye out go to the hair dressers and get it striped

if you use a semi permanent color your hair will eventually fade back to the original color, if you dont have any other color on your hair, see heres how it works, the volume of developer determines how permanent it is... if you use semi permanent color you are using a 5 or 10 volume developer, which only deposits color, thereby leaving your hair in its normal state, without opening the hair cuticle. in essence you are staining your hair shaft. If you use permanent color you are using 20 volume or higher..which lightens your natural color and then deposits back the color into your hair shaft...opening the cuticle to do so, then closing it again when you rinse, therefore the obvious most damaging of the two would be the permanent color, The only way semi permanent color would turn to permenent color would be if you had previously colored your hair with a higher volume devevloper...therefore if your red is natural for you and not from a bottle then the semi perm will stain your hair and slowly fade away.. And as i said before, the permanent color is more damaging, but highlift colors or bleach are even more damaging, but you would really have to color ALOT to damage from only coloring...the semi permanent is so safe...i would say go for it, its not going to damage your hair.. and yes you can flat-iron it too, you should always use a styling product to protect your hair from the heat when using hot tools anyway.. color or not...
Hope this helps.

semi permanent die actually does more damage to your hair than permanent die. Should you not like it and want to strip it permanent die removes better. Hair dye may fade over time but even semi permanent will not come out completely. You can still do whatever you want to the dyed parts. your best bet is to go to a salon. there the best dyes colors and if you dint like it most place have a guarantee. They will fix it. if you choose to do it yourself at home go to a beauty supply store like sally's the girls that work there should be able to help you pick out the best color and dye for your hair type.

Depending on the color a semi-permanent color will leave outgrowth and sometimes need touched up. Semi's do fade to a certain extent. If your hair is red and you use black it will not fade much. Semi-permanent colors do have a low volume of developer used with then which will deposit color permanently into the hairs cuticle. These colors are used primarily to blend in gray to your natural color but may be used to enhance color.

i think whatever dye you use, your hair color will go back to the color it was, i used to dye my hair blonde for years and years and decided to go back to my natural color which is brown and all i did was stop using the dye, i never tried dying it back to the original color and all the blonde just fell out and my normal hair color grew in it's place. and yes you can still use a flat iron on the colored parts. you can probably search a well know hair salon or hair dye manufacturer and ask for hair tip do's and don'ts...hope this helps

i have no expertise, but i recently found:
permanent hair dye get into the actual hair, and chemically changes it. think like the paper towels, and its tube center. the "paper" is dyed, along with the center. the paper fades, and you need to re-dye it every so often.
the pigments in semi-perm. dyes aren't as strong, so they only dye the paper towel part. but the dye is still permanent. your hair will have likely changed a few shades toward the dyed color.
like if you have light blond hair, and you dye it brown. it will go mostly back to blond, but it will also have shades of dirty blond in it.
ok, does that make sense.....?

and yes, you can still use a flat iron
it doesnt damage your hair, like killing it or anything. but think: your putting chemicals that change the color for a specified amout of time. it sure aint good for your hair. the dye lasts as long as it says on the back of the package.
