I got a rescue cat two years ago . she must have been through a lot . she would not come out from under my bed for 3 days . It has taken a lot of love and patience to finally get her so that she is not afraid of company or different noises . Just talk to her , pet her , and provide her with a safe quiet place to sleep . She will come around in time .

That's a darned good question. I have the same problem with one of mine. I don't know what happened to her....she came from the Humane Society so I imagine there was trauma in her early months.

She cannot bear to be face to face or to look someone in the eyes. She loves to "nurse" on me, but god forbid my face gets too close!

Anyway, I just give her as much love and space as she needs.

I've also been trying this essence thing called Scaredy Cat. It's a liquid that I put on her head using a dropper. Sounds a bit wacked but some people swear by it. It's sort of along the lines of Feliway Rescue Remedy.

I can't report amazing results, but she might be making a tiny bit of progress.....

It cost about $15, which was a small price to potentially waste if it didn't work out. And it will last for quite a while, so I figured it's worth a shot. You can check out the link below if interested.

Sometimes this is just the personality of the cat and there's not much you can do. I also have a cat who used to be very shy. The SPCA said she was semi-feral when I adopted her. She has come out of her shell so much! But she's still a little skiddish.

Who knows what may have happened to your cat before he came into your life? Or if you've had him since he was a kitten, if he is otherwise healthy, don't worry about it. Just accept him and love him and give him safe places to hide out when he needs to.

I don't think it is because you have moved a lot. I moved a lot with my oldest cat and he is fine. He's bossy to tell you the truth. My youngest is shy. He has only moved once. I took him to the vet because I thought he was a little off. My vet just explained he has a different personality. Just like humans have different personalities. I just give him a lot of attention and play with him.
