You are in luck. There are several choices for electric cars around $10,000.

Electric vehicle conversions (a gas car converted to run on electricity) are generally pretty inexpensive, and can be had for as little as $5000. You won't get the latest technology, so you'll have a limited driving range. But a conversion is a great way to 'get your feet wet' in electric vehicles. This is the sort of car I drive. It does freeway speeds, accelerates and handles fine, and looks like a normal car. I charge mine up at work so I have enough juice to run errands on the way home. Here's a link:

How about new tech electric cars? If you don't need to get on the freeway, you might like the ZAP. The ZAP is only $10,000 brand new. It's very cute, but tops out at about 45mph. Link:

Now if you want a brand new model, freeway capable EV for $10,000, that's tougher. But such a thing may be coming from China, where EVs are more popular. Here's the website of a Chinese electric car distributor. Look at the prices, in US dollars - they start at only $6500:

Will we see these cars in the US? The problem is US regulations and crash testing requirements, which will add cost to the prices of cars like these. But I know that importers are working to get Chinese EVs onto American roads. It's just a matter of time.

This is probably one of many myth's. The design of motorcars is driven by marked forces. Therefore, the first one who comes up with a decent electric car will make tons of money. They were around almost 100 years ago and disappeared because not enough people wanted to buy them. Plain and simple . Governments of to day would love to lessen our addiction to terrorist oil. It's coming , sooner than you think.

No one will produce an all electric car for $10,000.

The average price of a car today is over $20,000. That is without the cost of developing new technology.
