I use Ubuntu, but, can not say it the best. It work well and there many others out there. I also have Suse, but, it an older version, so, Ubuntu better than it. Then I have Sam 2005, but, it very basic and need a lot added to be really good. But, they all Linux. I really starting to enjoy Ubuntu as I learn more. Their forum and Help pages make a big difference when I have trouble. My woman friend and me working together to learn and that fun too. :-p

It is the most hyped but I don't know if it is the best, not even as a desktop. I found the internet connection extremely buggy which ruled out getting help except on another machine or by dual booting with xp. It also seems to be like a cult thing with ubuntu with everyone swearing by it and then going onto their forums to moan about bugs. I used it for a year to give it a chance then ditched it.
Gentoo - a bugger to even get installed.
Mandriva - nice.
Linspire - didn't impress me
Mepis - nice for someone crossing over from windows
PclinuxOS - what I use. I like it best and it is what Mandriva should be.

I don't want to waste my time to download, install, try, and uninstall every single distros.

I do have experience using Xandros, Mepis, and the last Ubuntu. I have problem with Xandros and Mepis. I can Install xandros but can't remove. I must make a mess in MBR to remove xandros. Mepis, has a strange issue, I can run the Live CD well without problem, but can't install to hard drive. Finally Ubuntu, dual boot with XP, i just get minor problem that a linux newbie like me can solve it.

I can't say that ubuntu is the best distro. I use it because it fit my need. I use it because the support and packages are better that other distros. I use it because it only 1 CD download, and not waste my time for downloading main CD installer. I can download other packages later.

Yes. Recently I have tried other Linux systems, such as openSUSE 10, Fedora Core 5, and Fedora Core 6, and was less satisfied than with Ubuntu.

there is no BEST version of linux, that's what makes linux such a nice choice...

the best choice is the one that you like....
Ubunntu and gentoo are both really good distros b/c they rely heavily on the Ports based syste, that makes BSD (both Free/NET/and Open) such a powerful OS.

Just try em out and see what you like. I know people who swear by Redhat just simply b/c of RPM, and others who swear by debian b/c of .......etc...

dont be a prude, try em all, see what you like and see why you like it..

that is after all what VMWare is for..

The reality is..Linux is linux, once it's installed what you do and how you install applications is irrelevant.

both gentoo and ubuntu though both have awesome support structures via their forums boards (forums.<>.<>) and thier ability to browse the package trees etc...

Your question is very subjective. I run Ubuntu as my desktop at work, and I would say it's the best at as a desktop Linux. However, we run CentOS on our servers. So, it really boils down to what you need your Linux to do.
