First, if you are negotiating in person, never look like you are in love with the truck even if you know you want it. That's where they will get you in the end.

Be prepared. Go to Edmuns.com, KBB.com, or NADA.com and print out the used car pricing value for this truck and use these references as a tool for negotiations. Most dealers use the Kelly Blue Book (i.e. KBB) to price their vehicles. Edmunds.com is the most comprehensive tool to understand the appropriate value for your area.

For example, from what I know of this truck, here's what I found...

2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4dr Crew Cab LS Rwd SB (5.3L 8cyl 4A)
. . . . . . . . . . $16,000 - $19,000 with no options
. . . . . . . . . . $19,000 - $23,500 with all options
. . . . . . . . . . $24,350 if it is a Certified Used Vehicle

2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4dr Crew Cab LT 4WD SB (5.3L 8cyl 4A)
. . . . . . . . . . $20,000 - $24,000 with no options
. . . . . . . . . . $21,000 - $26,000 with all options
. . . . . . . . . . $26,800 if it is a Certified Used Vehicle

2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4dr Crew Cab Z71 4WD SB (5.3L 8cyl 4A)
. . . . . . . . . . $18,000 - $22,000 with no options
. . . . . . . . . . $22,000 - $27,350 with all options
. . . . . . . . . . $28,250 if it is a Certified Used Vehicle

For added protection, get the VIN and do a CarFax on it to make sure it has a clean title.

Just ask the seller if the price is firm and explain that you have only $ 22,000 budgeted for a vehicle. If he or she or they really want to sell it, they may be willing to come down on the price.
