The way it goes, popcorn dries out! Probably is a bit stale, too. But the way it pops is because of a tiny bit of moisture inside that expands when heated, POP! So you can see that if it is the plain old-fashion kind (pre microwave era packaging) , it's most likely bad. The kind in the jar might still be salvageable, but they're cheap enough, toss them.

Does Popcorn Go Bad

2 key questions...are we talking kernals or microwave corn here?

If they are kernals, that have been sealed well, they will be fine, they just might not pop was well. Look closely at them, and if you don't see any bugs just run some through you hand. If you feel a gritty substance toss em. Otherwise they are perfectly good.

If they are microwave check to see that the plastic seal is intact. Also check for an expiration date, as the seasoning might go bad. If the seal/plastic wrap is not broken they will be fine as well.

Boy folks always panic here and yell to throw out stuff. Just check it out. And popcorn is not gonna kill you...worst case is they will not pop or pop tiny and then you can chuck em anyway.

LOL. That's a great image! No, I do that, actually. What makes popcorn pop is that there is a little bit of air inside the kernel. When it is heated enough, the hot air expands (think a hot air balloon) and has no place to escape to until it outright explodes. While the human body is plenty warm, it isn't hot enough to make the air expand like that.

yes they go bad. even microwavable popcorn only has a shelf life of like 8 months. time to toss it.

They won't pop! There is water inside that makes popcorn pop. It will dry up and go bad. besides it's cheap and biodegradable!

Throw them out righ away, popcorn kernels are normaly seasoned with butter/oil and salt etc, that would go bad after 6 months max.

chuck them out. They likely have mites or mealy moth larvae in them. I found an old bag, popped it (it didnt pop well) and on closer inspection found the larvae-not worth the risk
