Hello Everyone~
I was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I've been treated for depression and anxiety for decades, but due to some EXTREMELY risky behavior, my therapist feels I'm really bipolar. She didn't like my meds (Lexapro) for my symptoms and suggested a psychiatrist. He aggreed w/ her speculation, and made the diagnosis. They feel my episodes were masked because of my long-time use of the anti-depressants. So, now, for lthe last 3 days, I am now a bipolar.

My fear is, the medicine will make me "not my self". I still want to be me. I just don't want the ups and downs. (i'm in a depressive state now) Does anyone have any good sites for "support" and education?? I really don't know what to expect.

NAMI.org is the site for the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill. You may be able to find a support group in your area.
I am still "me", and I take 5 psychotropics for bipolar disorder. I don't feel drugged except at bedtime (a good thing--I can sleep!). I'm actually calmer, less impusive; i.e., more "normal".

Bipolar is treatable, so don't worry you will still be able to be yourself. Did they start you on a mood stabilizer? Go to the internet and just type in Bipolar Affective Disorder. You will find alot of information. If you are currently depressed then you should probably stay on an antidepressant, but they can also cause someone to get manic.

hi,

ok, this is really just an extreme case of manic depression.. like the pneumonia of the flu.

some docs still like to use lithium... for some of us, it's not o great... I got very lucky when I was diagnosed and have a great doc.. she put me on topamax and lamictal.. I cycle MAYBE 1 time a year, if that.. but I have gone for 3 years without cycling. and I'm "me" all the time.

I don't have any sites, but my dad is bipolar and he refuses to take medicine and he keeps getting worse and worse, now he is hurting people around him and losing people he loves.

Also, the medication doesn't change the way you are it just takes away the mood swings.

So, take the medicine and don't be depressed about it, think of it as a new beginning/a happier life!!!

You may have to try several different drug combinations before you find the right one. My son is bipolar and he is currently taking Adderall and Risperdal and it works fairly well for him. Trust me, he has been on some other combinations that were not good. His attempt at taking Abilify was a disaster because he slept all the time. Lamictal was another disaster because it gave him a rash.

Try using cod liver oil, three tablespoons a day. It tastes nasty but it is worth a try. Also cut down on sugar.
I really believe the oil will help after three days. Do some research on it, it is better than drugs.
Rite Aid sells it for $10 for 12 ounces. Very cheap and great resulsts. You can buy some overpriced ones but the results will be the same.
PS, try "EFT"
Good luck.

I agree with Bree CBT is a great coping mechanism for bi-polar, medication is half the solution, therapy getting to know you & your cycles is paramount. Having plans for the highs & lows, support from professionals & loved ones. Medication hits us all at first but you will bounce back as your body adjusts, i used to be afraid of losing my creativity now i fear nothing but loss of control over myself. You are not alone sweetie.

instead of using meds all the time, why don't you try cognitive behavioral therapy? psychologists can do it, and there are also books on it.
you can still take meds if you want, but i heard the therapy is effective.

Psychiatry is BULLSHlT !

I have been diagnosed with:

OCD
ADD
ADHD
bio-schizo
schizophrenia
borderline personality disorder
bipolar disorder
body dismorphic disorder

What the hell is all that?

Did you know that Prozac causes hundreds of people to commit suicide each year?

Get off those drugs and I gaurantee you will feel a whole lot better.
