I am 22 weeks pregnant with twins and craving mushrooms ( broccolli and coke, what a mix huh!)
I am just wondering if anyone knew if they had any food value in them?

Mushrooms are amazing. They have extraordinary amounts of important nutrients and they're tasty too. My mum grows them and she can't stop talking about them.

Mushrooms contain about 80 to 90 percent water, and are very low in calories (only 100 cal/oz). They have very little sodium and fat, and 8 to 10 percent of the dry weight is fiber. Hence, they are an ideal food for persons following a weight management program or a diet for hypertensives.

Mushrooms are an excellent source of potassium, a mineral that helps lower elevated blood pressure and reduces the risk of stroke. One medium portabella mushroom has even more potassium than a banana or a glass of orange juice. One serving of mushrooms also provides about 20 to 40 percent of the daily value of copper, a mineral that has cardioprotective properties.

Mushrooms are a rich source of riboflavin, niacin, and selenium. Selenium is an antioxidant that works with vitamin E to protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. Male health professionals who consumed twice the recommended daily intake of selenium cut their risk of prostate cancer by 65 percent. In the Baltimore study on Aging, men with the lowest blood selenium levels were 4 to 5 times more likely to have prostate cancer compared to those with the highest selenium levels.

Judging for the articles I'd say yes though before your question I'd have answered I don't think so.

Recent studies have traced shiitakes' legendary benefits to an active compound contained in these mushrooms called lentinan. Among lentinan's healing benefits is its ability to power up the immune system, strengthening its ability to fight infection and disease. Against influenza and other viruses, lentinan has been shown to be even more effective than prescription drugs; it even improves the immune status of individuals infected with HIV, the virus that can cause AIDS.

Edible mushrooms have high nutritional value, and some consider themfunctional foods. A raw mushroom is a good source of manganese, zinc, iron,folate, vitamin C, protein and dietary fiber, and a very good source ofselenium, potassium, phosphorus, panothenic acid, vitamin B6, riboflavin,thiamine and vitamin D. A number of Asian studies, mainly on shiitake andmaitake mushrooms, have suggested that mushrooms or their components might aidin the treatment of certain cancers, boost the immune system and reduce the riskof coronary heart disease. U.S. research suggests that the white mushroom might have a positive effectin the treatment and prevention of breast cancer, and perhaps prostate cancer.

Mushrooms have copper. Broccoli has lots of A. Both are nutritious. (I guess the craving just wants the coke to wash it down). Go for it!

Don't think so, a few carbs perhaps. Try smothering them in butter and garlic.

Broccoli is good. Lots of folic acid.

i *heart* mushrooms. They are my favorite food and i am pretty darn healthy!
