I hate it when I draw a guys name for a secret pal. So hard to pick something out, and being a pastor makes it harder. I don't know what your price limit is, but I would find out where your pastor was born and raised, then maybe go to Barnes and Noble and get a picture book of the area. Or find out where he would like to vacation and get a travel guide. If he likes a particular era such as WWll, the Civil War etc then get one on that.
Or a themed gift basket/box. A bottle of wine, a box of spaghetti, spag sauce.
A movie, pop corn, soda.
Or anything else that would be fun/unique.

I would try and find out what he likes or what his interests are, and get something that goes with that interest. Maybe ask someone who knows him better what he likes, or what his hobbies are.

some ideas:
Maybe find out what kind of food he likes. Then get him a food related gift. Men always like food.

I advise against a gift card. It shows laziness and that you didn't care or bother to get something for that person.

You can also look around his office in the church, or glance at his desk for clues. Maybe he has something there, like a photo of himself doing a hobby ...say going skiing, or playing a sport.

You can also look at how he dresses, and try and get him a shirt or even tie that goes with his style.

The only detail you mention about him is that he is an asst. minister at the church...so he is religous. Maybe find a special book pertaining to your religon and give it to him, with a nice message from you written inside.

Everyone has some kind of interests so even if you find out just a small idea of what he likes, you can be creative and find something. Just as an example, my daughter got a gift for her bday that was an art kit to paint dolphins and an ocean scene. one of her friends remembered seeing a photo of her swimming with dolphins.

If you add any more info about him maybe I can give you more ideas.

A gift card always makes a good gift and it is safe. Maybe starbucks or jamba juice or a restaurant in the area. I also like giving Barnes and Nobles or Borders giftcards.

Good luck!

Find out if he has a hobby or favorite sport and buy something related to that. I think the purpose is to encourage you to get to know people so ask around.
