It really depends on why the person is in a wheelchair. If it is a spinal cord injury, then the level of the injury will affect what movements are available. For example, if the injury was in the lower back area, then the affected body parts would be the base of the spine & the legs, leaving the person with (most likely) good balance & the ability to do many activities from weight lifting, to wheelchair sports like basketball, handball, etc to kayaking with adequate support to maintain position in the boat. If the injury is higher in the back (say chest level or even in the neck), then there may be balance compromises or even involvement (ie some loss of motor control) of the arms & that would affect the choices available. If the person suffers from a muscular disorder that affects strength, then muscle weakness & control would be the limiting factors.
The best idea is to speak to the person & find out what they can, and want, to accomplish. Just like an able body person, just because someone could play basketball, doesn't mean they want to ;o).

That is a great question. I am a handicapped person trying to lose like 80lbs and exercising is a difficult task for me. I too wonder what kind of exercising I can do to help me lose the weight. Walking is uncomfortable for me as my left side is partially paralyzed from a stroke. If you get any good answers I too would be interested in finding out proper exercise for me. Depends on the person and her / his limitations. With help, outside of the wheel chair, they maybe able to do situps. Sitting in a chair they can do light weight training. It's going to vary a great deal from person to person. But they should talk to a doctor BEFORE starting any kind of program.

There's wheel chair basketball but that looks a bit rough, maybe look up a web site all about the olympic games and look for the disability section of olympic sports, i suppose you could do disc shooting and they have all kinds of races.

If you are paralyzed try and move your legs, try and believe that you can, it is said in the bible that if you pray and believe then you shall have. You should try if you are paralyzed. If you have broke you leg then you should exersise your arms. Try weights or something. You can also do like pullups. put a bar very close to your wheel chair and then do pullups gently. They can do all sorts. There are basketball leagues just for them.
