I got a check for $21 ( I know, exciting) from the taxation department. Does this mean that I don't need to worry about whether the IRS will come after me? Does it mean that they've checked everything and that it's okay? See previous question if you want more details.

Thanks!

No. First of all, your check is from the state, not the IRS, so has nothing to do with your federal return. And if something is found later on your return that isn't right, they can still come after you.

No, all it means is that they checked your return for math errors and obvious, gross violations of the law and paid you the refund that you claimed. And that's only for your OH state return. The IRS is a totally separate entity and you have to settle with both of them.

The IRS generally has 3 years to review your return and assess any additional taxes unless fraud or tax evasion are involved. (There is no SOL for tax fraud or tax evasion.)

States generally follow Federal rules but OH is an exception. They will go back 4 years.

No. Most returns aren't examined until the statute of limitations is set to expire. If your 2006 return is audited, it likely won't be until late in 2008. To get your refund, all that is required is that there are no math errors or obvious code errors; e.g., person files for head of household making $25,000, etc. Otherwise, unless there is something seriously illegal, you have a 3 year statute of limitations to wait for absolution.
