People who work at home opt for white because painting a room black will ruin its resale value to normal, non-photographic, home buyers, most particularly if you use the bathroom!!

The technical solution is not only black, but flat non-reflective black. A normal door will require towels or such, because they are designed to let air pass underneath for ventillation and this means light can also reflect in. The best solution is to hang a heavy light-proof drape just inside the door. That also reduces the risk of catastrophic entry by non-photo inclined people. Bathrooms may have air vents and windows, so be sure to cover those as well. A cell phone will give off enough light to ruin your work, so work out a different communication method. Some B\W work can be done with 'safe light' but you still have to get rid of external light leaks.

go black my friend - there should be no errant light bouncing around your darkroom and dark walls will help eat up any light that may sneak in. not sure why a white wall would be a good idea, though i'd like to hear any arguments for it.

My dad had a darkroom in our house for many years before the advent of digital photography, and those walls were white.

It worked for him.

Typically, you should paint it black. As many before have said, any errant light seeping into the room won't bounce around.. and DEFINATELY flat black.

You can easily re-paint the room white if this is in your house by using a GOOD primer or "KILZ".
