I've started regularly exercising, and I'm trying to eat a balanced diet. Sometimes I just have to have a certain food and I can not control it. Do you have any tips on staying away from junk food? Thanks

My wife has a great quote.

"Wanna lose weight? Don't layer your plate"

Getting in shape and losing weight comes down to will power, which the majority of people just don't have. That is why they diet hop.

Technically speaking, hundreds of diets will work for you if you stick with them long enough.

But if there is a particular food you can't live without, just shrink the portion of it you want to eat. If its a chocolete, have a 1/4 of a chocolete bar or 3 hershey kisses versus 15 or an entire snickers.

It's not realistic to live everyday without eating something "bad" for you. In fact, things like the above aren't bad for you as long as its done in moderation.

I don't drink alcohol but I am fully aware that a glass of red wine a night is healthy for you.

You're right in moving toward a balanced diet..."balance" being the key word. Here's what's worked for me: I stick with whole grains over refined, I try to eat at least a couple decent size portions of fruit and vegetables a day (my biggest challenge), and I make sure I'm getting enough lean protein (through low-fat dairy, soy, chicken, turkey or fish) in each of my meals or snacks. I avoid anything containing high fructose corn syrup or refined flour. I don't count calories, ever, but I do have a general awareness of what and how much I'm consuming. A very important thing is that I do not deprive myself...I do eat sweets, almost every day, but because I allow myself this indulgence, I never feel the urge to go overboard. Also, a lot of times when I'm craving sweets, I find that a piece of fruit, a small smoothie, or a yogurt will satisfy me. But sometimes I just need a couple of cookies, and that's fine, too.
Other things that help keep me on track are: getting enough sleep, drinking water throughout the day, and working in a short but brisk walk in the afternoon. I wish you success in your journey toward a healthy lifestyle, it is worth it!...and the more you do, the easier it gets.

I have found it is better to indulge in a little of the junk rather than try to stay away from it completely. Usually it is only the first three bites that taste good.....so if you really have a craving for something that isn't good for you, go ahead and have a little bit of it (take the tiny portion and then put the rest out of sight.)

If you try to satisfy a craving with other things, you bill probably end up over eating other things and then end up finally giving in and eating way too much of the food you were trying to avoid.

Also drink lots of water and try to eat high fiber foods. If you don't like drinking water you can squeeze some lemon in it to add a little flavor.

The best way I've found is to allow myself a small amount of something I want- I initially start off with, say, one bar of chocolate per week- then I know if I give in on Monday I can't have another one until the following Monday and often keep a handle on it until Friday! You can also try carrying round appetite suppressants like bran tablets (not unhealthy ones) or something healthy to munch on when you're feeling peckish (apples, celery, low calorie snacks etc.). Another way to deal is to 'work off' any food- so if you really have to have a helping of ice-cream or something, you can exercise that bit harder to work it off! Don't beat yourself up for indulging in something naughty once in a while- at the end of the day it's better to be a few pounds overweight and enjoy your life than to obsess overly much about food in order to be skinny all the time!

You cannot totally drop all junk food - just control how much of it you eat. If you like chips, just eat a few instead of eating the whole bag. Most healthy diets fail because people arent realistic and cant maintain it.

For some odd reason having more of what I crave around the house make me eat it more. Possibly because I think, if I eat this I will gain weight. Yes, I do left my self indulge every now and then in it(about once a week I have some ice cream). I am not sure if this will work for you, but it does for me. Good for you for working towards a healthier lifestyle. You can do it.

Eat snacks that are high in fiber and low on fat (all wheat cereals?) so you get full and won't snack on junk food. Yogurt and butterless popcorn are also good.

To stay as healthy as possible, you should stay awat from two things; partially hydronginated oils and high fructose corn syrup.
These two ingrediants are bad for you and make you plump.
