according to the book Timeline by Michael Crichton, there is no such thing as time travel, only universal travel. There are millions of different universes that have broken off of our original universe with minor differences from ours and are not directly connected to ours. so if u were to travel to one, what u do in that universe will not cause ur universe any difference. itll only take part in that separate universe. this answer sounds like a bunch of crap, but just find an explanation from a summary of timline, or actually read the book, and it will make perfect sence. This actual senario comes up in the book in the first couple of chapters.

that would only be possible if there were alternative parallel universes. Maybe when you go back in time there are only 2 universes unless the machine go into other alternative universes . So for sure there will be 2 but we still dont know if we can go to different ones

If time travel was possible, it would only be forward & one-way.
Otherwise, someone with the tchnology could simply travel backwards & then 'invent' the technology or risk the mucking about with history in the way you describe.

If (like me you come from Gallifrey , in the constellation of Casterberous) you would know this.
Time has a way of ironing out temporal anomalies , besides us timelords would intervene and prevent this (possibly send in the CIA - Celestial Intervention Agency)!
