A lot of couples are making the decision to omit this from their ceremony. And some.....just in case. There have been breakups that weren't exactly amicable
Some ministers may try to gloss over the intrusion, while the objectionable person is escorted from the room. If the person insists, the ceremony may be stopped to see if there is, in fact, a "just cause" . If a ruckus starts, the police are usually called.
If someone does object, I have known some ministers who WILL NOT continue the ceremony at all. The whole wedding is halted & the minister will conduct a small ceremony the following day.
It is best to have a clean slate to start your marriage.

Is this an American thing? I have never heard it in the UK. I got married last year and it wasn't said. All the formalities are checked before the weding here so no one can object anyway. I tend to think its a Holl;ywood films thing that doesnt actually happen in real life.

the minister asked that question when i got married 7 yrs ago and no one objected, but there was an unusually lengthy pause before she continued with the ceremony. it's just a formality and it's mostly in traditional ceremonies. you can have it omitted from your service if you like.

1. It goes on ignored.
2. the bride runs out.
3. the groom runs out.
Never seen it happened, normally when someone has a feeling that someone is going to object- they won't be invited. I was at one wedding where the mother of the bride laid on the outside step of the church screaming and crying cause she didn't want her daughter to marry him. The bride just stepped over her screaming mother and walked on....
Mother was right though... She has only know him for 2 weeks in person... met on the Internet. Had a kid with him and one night after a fight he held her and his baby at gun point for hours. Luckily, the neighborhoods heard her screaming and called 911. Everyone got out alright... guys in jail and seeking help. Girl moved back home with her mother :)

Haven't you ever watched a romance?? In hollywood it happens all the time. Right after the minister asks the question the brides TRUE love comes running in and confesses his undying love for her... and then the groom punches his lights out for ruining his otherwise happy marraige. lol (i got a little carried away with that one!!!)

Actually, at my fiancee's insistence, the minister won't ask that question at our wedding - because she doesn't want to give my brother a chance to answer! :-)
