What do I do? Will he be alright?

Okay it has stopped bleeding now (phew), still I'm afraid it will get infected, what can I use to prevent this? Home remedies would be appreciated.

And this is not due to carelessness, I have trimmed them many a time before and he has been fine, I must have just caught the vessel.

You cut into the quick. If it hasn't stopped bleeding by now, apply some styptic pencil--the stuff men use when they cut themselves shaving. If you don't have that use baking soda or just apply pressure to the bleeding with a clean tissue until the bleeding stops. If your bird is frightened and fights it, let it go--it won't bleed to death from this. Surprisingly, the person who suggested super glue is not wrong, either. I'm an RN, and in the winter the skin on my fingers will get these deep painful cracks in them. The dermatologist told me to use super glue, and I tried it, and it works--instant pain relief. It's only toxic if you sniff it!

You might want to try some of those sandpaper rolls that slip over the bird's perches as soon as his foot gets well. They work like an emery board so you don't have to clip their nails. The bird will also chew on it to trim his beak. You can change them when they become soiled with droppings.

I wouldn't worry about it. You can use some quick stop or corn starch to stop the bleeding.

To do a DNA test on a bird you cut the toe nail to make it bleed. The bleeding should stop soon. Just keep an eye on the bird.

Not too long ago I had a bird that wouldn't stop bleeding after we used the corn starch so in a pinch we used dirt. Believe it or not, it really worked.

Yes it happens to me to my groomers and even vets. You just nicked a blood vessel. Keep a towel and a little pressure on it and he will be fine. I actually have a Pomeranian and he has to go get his nails clipped at the vets because his blood vessels are to close so the vet has to do it and then cauterize each nail. Don't freak out. It is very common.

I read that cornstarch put on a styptic pencil will help or you can use styptic powder. I also read that there is a vein in their toe and if they don't stop bleeding, you should take them right to the vet. If the bleeding stops pretty quickly, it should be okay. If not, at least call the vet.

He will be fine, It is like clipping the paw. Do not worry about it. If you take it to the vet to get there nails trimmed they sometimes do the same thing they just hold there finger over it till it stops bleeding. HE?/She WILL BE FINE!!!

try to stop the bleeding if that does not work bring him to the vet quick! he'll probably need antibiotics, as infection can set in quite quick. claws on animals are the most sensitive prt of their bodies. just like us the have millions of nerve endings in them. but I'm sure he'll be fine, just in a fair amount of pain for a while!

Probably. ONe of mine ripped his toenail OFF during a night fright and he lived! make a paste with a little baking soda and water, try to pack that on the nail, hold your finger over it for about a minute. Hopefully that will stop the bleeding.
Good Luck.

Take him to the vet.

Tomorrow get some kwik stop for the next time you clip the nail into the vein.

Don't worry too much! He'll be okay. Dab a little hydrogen peroxide with a Q-tip on his toe to kill any bacteria, and then dab on a little Neosporin. Do this for a day or two and everything will be fine. It would probably be fine without the medical care, but better to be safe.

I did this to my cat once, and I think we feel worse than our poor critters!!
