I am a preschool teacher and we have had really good experiences from any Leap Pad products.
We got my son a Leap Pad and he started reading at age 4. He is now in 2nd grade and reads at a 4th grade level. So I will ALWAYS stick with Leap Pad.

Avoid so called "educational" toys. It is a scam. Old fashioned blocks, for example, do more for cognitive development than plastic crap with bells and whistles. For great developmental, natural toy ideas, check out:

The best thing you can do for your child is read to them, from birth, daily.

The peek o boo hippo helped my son learn to walk. It's well worth it.
