You are best not getting a dog now. NO FEMALES (obviously) but 2 males will fight for dominance!
BLOODY BATLLE. If you want one ALOT then go to a shelter and get a spayed female so that there are no puppies!

Many suggestions will be good (such as the Beagle already suggested - just be prepared about the famous Beagle bark/howl).

I have two pups - both 8 months old. However, in my case, both are obedience trained (professionally) and neutered. One is a Golden and the other is a Dalmatian. They are similar in size at the moment, but the Golden is a bit bigger. Dals have lots of energy and will keep your Golden going. Mine play very well together (yes, they fight, but it's all play fighting and, as I'm the "alpha", I can easily break it up if it gets annoying). So while a Dal isn't that much smaller, I did find it to be a good match.

Good luck!
