A lot of people are trying to take action. But in teh United States (among others) policy initiatives are so far all but non-existant at the national level. The reason is simple--special interests (mainly the oil and coal industries) are blocking action through a combination of misinformation, lobbying, and "campaign contributions" (bribery).

Many people are doing things about it. Companies are developing more efficient products, designing cheaper solar technology, etc. The US Dept of Energy is investing millions in alternative energy sources.

We may not be able to stop the progress of Global Warming in the near future, projections say if we stopped using fossils fuels right now the effects could last for over 200 years, but at least we can create alternatives to doing more damage.

There are ways we all can help, you just have to realize that little things can make a big difference if we ALL do them.
