I have a great idea. Go to www.petplanet.co.uk and at the top there are lots of yellow bars. One is breed profiles, and click on it. At the bottom of the window that has opened is a thing called "Select a breed". You simply fill in what your life is like and other things and it will compare your results with a huge list of dog breeds, and whatever fits you the best will appear. If you are an experienced dog owner you can probably deal with some stubborn breeds. Because you live in a flat, you dont want a yappy dog, because it can be removed by the law if it is disturbing your neighbors. I reccomend a small dog such as a English cocker spaniel or a chinese crested. chinese crested comes in a hairless and fully haired variety. they are god in flats, not yappy and a good dog for beginners. Seems like a good dog for you. If you would like any more help, you can email me at malonecanine@yahoo.com. I have several dogs including a german sheperd, border collie and a komondor (a big dog that looks like bob marley). Also, if you go to your local shelter the people there will happily find a good dog for you. there are loads of loving dogs that need a home, and you could be that person. If you want a good book, buy the new encyclopedia of dog breeds by bruce fogle that you can buy at www.amazon.com. It is a great book for anyone that wants a dog.
MAKE SURE THAT YOU GET A GOOD DOG THAT FITS YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES OR BAD THINGS CAN HAPPEN!

Good luck!

a yorkshire terrier
a poodle
a chihuahua
something small...maybe see which small dogs you like
as long as you take the dog out for regular walks and run arounds you should be ok...but if you are busy all of the time maybe a cat is better
have fun with your fish !! it is better than having a dog !!! :)
good luck and maybe some day you can have 2 fish

I wouldn't even consider it if you go to work or intend to leave it for any length of time . Even small dogs need exercise and puppies will love destroying your furniture. Think about your neighbours too, dogs have a habit of barking when anyone comes to the door.A flat is not a suitable environment for a dog . You may not like this answer but really think about it before you buy.

only so which you be attentive to, a coach is nice for usual obedience (take a seat, stay etc) yet you ought to lavatory prepare the canines. you are the only residing with it, no longer the instructor and loo coaching a canines isn't a speedy one hour consultation many times happening - its a on a regular basis, hourly technique from a pup upwards. additionally, its no longer a plant - you do no longer "enhance a pup from scratch"! do slightly diagnosis on a good number of diverse breeds - exceedingly the smaller canines are in lots of cases plenty extra energetic than you think of. And in case you don't be attentive to what a breed become initially used for, you ought to be in for a great ask your self whilst it acts a undeniable way! you ought to do a good number of study and narrow your determination to possibly 2 or 3 canines - then communicate to proprietors of those breeds which you like and spot how your existence are comparable or diverse. canines are difficult artwork - in case you will very own a canines, you ought to be very to blame and financially preserve. do no longer forget approximately coverage, good high quality nutrition, vaccines, neutering etc all fee a honest volume of money. in case you're in college, youre mothers and dads are going to be looking after it during the day - so so you might discover something to in good shape all of you.

It depends on the breed and the amount of exercise you will be able to provide outside of the flat. Certain breeds need lots of exercise and play time ie. jack russells, they may be small but they need lots of exercise to burn off their energy. I had a small place with a cocker spaniel and he was fine as long as he had nice long walks to burn his energy.
Shih tzu, bichon frise, and mini pinschers are fairly low maintenance.

The akc.org has a puppy quiz to assist you with the best dog to suit your needs.... Good Luck!
