First of all, to clear some things up... NEVER walk away from your dog when it bites you. That is simply teaching it that it is the dominant figure. Distracting your puppy with another thing, like a chewy, or Kong toy, will simply reinforce the behavior that you don't want, and worse, its just a bandaid/quick fix. How old is your dog? What breed is it? How often are you exercising your dog, how long, and with what rules? You want to make your dog stop this behavior completely. If you would like, I would be more than happy to try and help you via email... My email address is ropintozinmt@yahoo.com

The Dog Whisperer is the man for this job; Cesar Milan ; National Geographic channel; don't encourage any tug of war play; any dog in any circumstance can bite; the best is to train the best you can; don't encourage rough play; praise good behavior; exercise; you don't give details of the biting?? how when , who etc ; a dog is an animal and the best that we know , we are not animals to know how they perceive an action; check out the dog whisperer

First off, how old is your dog? If it's still a puppy/young dog, then most likely it's a teething thing. I've heard that dogs will bite for up to 2 years. Try Bitter Apple spray...it works wonders.

Also, try seeing a pet behaviorist. They're the best for what you're trying to accomplish.

It's normal for puppies to playfully bite, my dog did the same thing. I am assuming your dog is still a puppy. When you're playing together and the dog starts biting harder, pat its nose and say "no" in a stern voice. If you make this a habit, the puppy should start to know that it is not acceptable. I've noticed this also works for other bad habits.

Well what you first actually need to do is don't listen to those people who say to use a mussel or hurt the dog. That can make it worse. What you need to do is teach it the word "no". After that, you can play with your dog. When he bites or chews, you need to immediately tell him "no", pull your hand out of his mouth, and end the play section. After a while, repeat that until he learns that he is not allowed to bite. I hope it works out for you.

my father-in-law, when his dog bites or nibbles, goes "ow ow ow" like he's being hurt. Pretending he's a doggy playmate and telling his dog to back off.

The Kilcommons book suggested earlier is VERY good.

Try distracting the puppy with something else to chew on besides you (like a Kong or a chewy).

Another way is to just walk away from the dog when he bites. That way, he'll know that biting will result in NO attention from you, no playtime, etc.

It is very good of you to adress your problem. If your dog does bite someone, your pet can be ordered to be put to sleep. I reccomend using a muzzle at all times while outside. Go to a dog behaviorists and they will help you sort your problems out. If it continues to be aggresive, it may be good to put it to sleep.

You probably have this problem because of lack of socialisation while it was young. Also, it may help to exercise your dog to vent some of its frustration and energy.

Say "NO" When your dog bites someone/something. Scold him/her for being bad. You could get a shock collar so when he/she does something bad you can lightly shock him (It will help with other things too besides bitting). To scold it you could use a spray bottle and fill it with water. Then just spray him/her once and they should stop.
