Yes it is one of the causes, but it must be remembered that a few yeast spores are likely to be present in most female vaginas in such small numbers that they cause no symptoms. Normally the presence of lactobacilli, a commensal, ( friendly bacteria) in the vagina fills most of the available ' infection space ' and protects the body from other infections.
Anything that alters the normal state can give the fungus room to expand and cause infection and symptoms. Good examples of this are the use of antibiotics, for other infections, these may kill the lactobacilli. Also anything that changes the ph ( acid level) in the vagina, in some women this occurs with every period.
