I am watching NASCAR and etiquette says women don't have to take hats off, but I notice lots of kids (boys) who have their hats on...but the men don't.

It is because for the NASCAR crowd their hats are "woobies" like a kid with a blanket. Real men know that you take off your hat and it is a sign of respect. Be is a skater hat, cowboy hat or ball cap.

It comes from centuries past. Removing your helmut, exposing your head and showing your eyes. Hiding behind a cap and keeping it low shows that you still have strength as you are not showing your eyes.

But most are uneducated. I saw a thing on the Today show a few days ago about a teenager who got a nail from a nail gun in his heart and survived. Ther he is on Tv with his Mom. She is wearing sweats and the kid........ though he tried to dress up a bit still was wearing his ratty baseball cap. The kid was well spoken but still........ the ettiquite worldwide in remove your hat.

Again....... a hat for the Nascar crowd is just a woobie. For women keeping it on is always appropriate.

Yes. Just as little kids should wear shirts and shoes in public, they should be familiarized with these kind of societal courtesies early in life.

Although, I don't know why the women aren't taking their hats off at the national anthem? I think everyone should.

In Thailand I saw how in a dictatorship people responded to the national anthem. I was in a theather to watch a movie and a picture of the King of Thailand suddenly appeared on the screen.
The theater was full of people, and everyone of them bolted to their feet. Myself and two other Air Force types were slower, but we also got to our feet.
You could just feel what fear felt like in the air. So, forget the small stuff! If you think something is right, then lead by example.

My son is now 14. When he was very young and we would go to parades where the flag was displayed and marched by. I would lean over and remove his hat while telling him the reason why. He learned this himself and grew to remove his own hat when the flag is carried by, in a restaurant, when entering a business or persons house...wherever it was polite and appropriate.

No you shoudn't be embarassed. the female became into impolite to you, and it became into in basic terms as impolite that she became into ingesting french fries, as you forgetting your hat. yet like somebody else reported, those days it particularly is diverse in contemporary circumstances, it is not as important to rigidly adhere to custom because it was once. So some greater fervently patriotic human beings, and surely militia will seem upon that with disdain, many different human beings won't care which you probably did no longer do away with your hat. It surely would not worry me - I mean it is not comparable to you probably did it intentionally or maliciously. that's ok :-)

The "hats off" rule should apply to boys as well. Parents are teaching these boys how to behave when they are adults. They should emulate adult behavior and take off their hats, too.

As far as I know, unless somthing has changed over the years, ALL men/boys should take thier hats off. It's a sign of respect.

# To salute, all persons come to attention.

* Those in uniform give the appropriate formal salute.
* Citizens not in uniform salute by placing their right hand over the heart and men with head cover should remove it and hold it to left shoulder, hand over the heart.
* Members of organizations in formation salute upon command of the person in charge.

It is rude not too. If you dont teach your kids as a child how are they going to learn? But I guess I am not too surprised that not everyone takes it off at a NASCAR race..

to all males wearing hats

as a historical note - the reason women are exempt has to do with the fact that in many eras the hat was attached to the hair with pins and such ( hatpins in fact )
