Today, while studying 1 Kings in the bible about King Solomon I was reading about how he betrayed God. In Chapter 11 it states he had 700 wives of royal blood and 300 wives that were concubines. I was wondering what 'concubines' is? I know it refers to his wives....but what kind of women were they?

Concubines are basically mistresses.
Their only purpose is to pleasure the man, but they do not inherit any of his wealth when he dies, and if they have any children they are unable to assume the throne.

A concubine is usually a secondary wife. They were usually not considered as official wives, for instance, their children would not be considered royalty (or official descendents) and may not have the standard inheritance. Nevertheless, most of the time they would have been considered a wife.

Sometimes even the regular wives were considered concubines since sometimes it means any lover. Concubine literally means "to lie together."

Often they were the women who tended the wives, and sometimes took their place as a wife. More than likely they were not royalty or of a special lineage. They were as part of the family, but had no authority in the family and had limited rights.

I'm not sure how concubines were different than wives, perhaps some legal distinction involving inheritance. Anyway the wives and the concubines were Soloman's personal stock of boy toys.

It's good to be the king. At least it was in those days.

Concubinage refers to the state of a woman or youth in an ongoing, quasi-matrimonial relationship with a man of higher social status. Typically, the man has an official wife in addition to one or more concubines. Concubines have limited rights of support as against the man, and their offspring are publicly acknowledged as the man's children, albeit of lower status than children born by the official wife or wives.

In modern usage, the term concubine often denotes the status of a quasi-wife who is not legally married to a man with whom she lives. The man (but not the woman) may or may not be in an ongoing legal marriage with another person. For example, in a California court case involving inheritance, Rosales v. Battle, a Mexican court had decided that the plaintiff had been the concubine of the deceased, on the grounds that they "had maintained a relationship publicly comparable to a marriage for about four or five years and had always behaved as though they were married, even though they had not contracted legal matrimony."

In France, Concubinage is the official term for cohabitation of heterosexual and, since 1998, homosexual couples. Some benefits of married couples or those bound by PACS (civil union) may then apply. In jurisdictions with common-law marriage, cohabiting partners may become common-law spouses after a certain length of time.

Concubine= a woman with whom a man cohabits without being married: or : one having a recognized social status in a household below that of a wife.
For Kings this was common practice, but I think that huge group of women caused real problems for Solomon.
