If you're a college student, you should try applying for student cards. They'll be more tolerant of a lower income. You can see which rewards credit card for students would pay you the most rewards at http://www.creditcardtuneup.com/?card_type=College+Student .

A couple of the better ones are the Citi mtvU card and the Citi Driver's Edge for Students card.

almost any visa or mastercard will work, but you cant use it in europe or other countries like you can here; some places dont take them at all, and some you have to buy over a certain amount of money, and dont forget the fees the cards charge. You should try to find one that doesnt charge for out of the country transactions. Keep the number to cancel it handy in case its stolen. I suggest you get two of them, or apply to several and see if anyone sends you one. They can be handy, but you should carry a fair bit of cash in a safe place and some smaller change in your pockets for little things.

For traveling, you want the credit card that has the lowest international transaction fee. The best would be:

CAPITAL ONE: 0% transaction fee. (Capital One not only doesn't impose its own fee, but it also eats the 1% fee that Visa or MasterCard impose.)

A debit card with VISA on the front is all you need as with your income your limit will be almost nothing.

Either way skip Amex as many (most) merchants in the world won't take it.
